Who Can Join

Football knowledge is helpful but not required. STXFOA provides training and mentorship to help new officials succeed.

To officiate high school football in Texas, you must first join the Texas Association of Sports Officials and complete their onboarding process.

Basic Requirements:

Must be at least 16 years old

Interest in football

Ability to attend training meetings

Willingness to learn rules and mechanics

Application Process
Training and Certifications

Once registered, you will:

Complete your registration on the TASO website

Select Football as your sport

Choose your local chapter (STXFOA)

Pay required state and chapter dues

Background Check Requirement

All new officials are required to complete a background screening through TASO.

Conducted as part of your TASO registration

Required before working games

Helps ensure the safety and integrity of high school athletics

May include identity verification and criminal history screening

Attend local chapter meetings and training sessions

Complete rules exams and TASO requirements

Participate in on-field training and evaluations

Training and Support

New officials receive instruction on rules, mechanics, and positioning during games. Our association offers training meetings, mechanics clinics, and mentorship from experienced officials. This training helps officials build confidence and develop the skills needed to officiate football games successfully.
